Introduction

The Lab Assistant carries out pre-analytical procedures related to registration, processing and collection of lab specimens. Applies understanding of laboratory operations to help clients in using lab services. Complies with all laboratory and security policies. Utilizes personal protective devices (PPE) as required by lab policy and regulating companies. Tradition Lab Services is an integrated lab service. Staff might be assigned to laboratory facilities at different sites in the system.

Duties

Report circulation and evaluation

Accurate distribution of reports according to treatments at each site.

Review and/or reconciliation of reports as directed by website manager.

Client Service

Written and spoken interaction making use of however not restricted to Fax, telephone and the Lab Details System (LIS).

Interaction complying with laboratory policies and procedures.

Fixing standard customer service problems or referring appropriately.

Computer Abilities

Usage of the Laboratory Information system and other systems related to the management of client orders and payment reconciliation. Consists of patient registration, payment processing, lab order retrieval, and test buying.

Phlebotomy

Carries out venipuncture and capillary collections suitable for the age of the patient, professionally and with very little discomfort in accordance with lab policy.

Specimen recognition

Follows all lab treatments for correct patient identification and specimen labeling.

Drug Screen Collection

Carries out drug screen (may consist of BAT testing) accurately, following guidelines and chain of custody exactly as recommended.

Specimen Getting/ Processing

Follows all procedures associating with specimen processing.

Communicates suitable information to healthcare suppliers regarding specimen collection.

Flags specimens for rejection.

Dispatches specimens to suitable testing locations.

Aliquots, labels, and processes specimens utilizing proper devices and gadgets, i.e., centrifuges and pipettes.

Shops specimens under proper ecological conditions using authorized retrieval systems.

Preserves lab devices and the basic look of the department.

Computer Downtime

Demonstrates knowledge of Computer system Downtime Procedures.

Understands, for provided job assignment, how to handle patient/specimen information when either the Order Communication or Laboratory Info systems are unavailable for usage.

Regulatory Compliance

Follow CAP, CLIA and other accreditation and security guidelines as explained in their respective standards.

Identify and interact problems that may adversely impact patient safety to the supervisor or manager. Participate in federal government or regulative firm assessments, if needed.

Training, Education and Safety

Attend department conferences and total training and education activities as appointed by the lab manager.

Participate in all relevant safety training sessions. Know the location and contents of the security manual. Know the location/use of all applicable security devices. Follow standard preventative measures for using personal protective equipment as needed.

Take part in training/education activities for brand-new workers and students as directed by the laboratory manager/supervisor.

Credentials

Education:

To meet the requirements of lab policies High school diploma or GED will be verified for any staff members employed on or after May 22,2012 For workers carrying out waived screening, a copy of the High School diploma or GED need to be offered the departmental file.

Experience:

Phlebotomy skills are required for lab assistants working in locations that perform specimen collection; previous work experience with phlebotomy or the successful conclusion of a phlebotomy training course that included an externship is needed.

Knowledge and Abilities:

Fundamental reading and writing skills.

Keyboard abilities and capability to browse electronic systems appropriate to job functions required.

Social and interaction abilities required.Ability to operate standard office devices (i.e., telephone, facsimile, copy machine, computer and printer).

Basic Medical terms preferred.

Experience with drug screen specimen collection and basic specimen selection, dealing with, and storage activities, preferred.

Customer support experience chosen.

Licensure/Certification:

Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist needed for all workers who carry out phlebotomy in the State of Washington (consisting of those who drift into the function).
