Overview

The Phlebotomy Professional I mostly perform skin leak or venipuncture on clients of all ages for the function of obtaining a blood specimen for analysis in the clinical lab and is under the supervision of Lab Director/ Supervisor/ Supervisor. The PT I; 1) carries out computer data entry, filing, telephone interaction and other clerical responsibilities, 2) possesses sufficient understanding of the terms of tests purchased in the lab, 3) shows good interaction abilities and telephone rules in welcoming patients and other visitors in a polite and friendly way, 4) shows appropriate phlebotomy method and using devices in gathering specimens from babies to geriatric patients, 5) processes microbiology, immunology, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, chemistry and blood bank specimens, 6) processes specimens for referral to recommendation labs, 7) stocks and orders regular products, 8) maintains the cleanliness of storage locations, trays, centrifuges, refrigerators, freezers and work areas, 9) processes or load specimens on automated laboratory instrumentation in accordance with recognized policy and treatments, 10) May be help to Pick up samples at medical facility/ OR, help lab specialized in sorting out samples for analysis and put away samples, help pathology, stock, renew materials, order products, mail pick up/ shipment, faxing, responding to phone, item shipments, and so on. 11) other jobs or duties may be appointed by the department manager/director.

Obligations

Carries out venipuncture and skin puncture on clients of any ages from newborn to geriatric in a safe, accurate, and timely way.

Gathers and processes biological specimens for lab analysis according to accepted treatment and observing proper safety measures with potentially hazardous substances.

Reviews and files orders for appropriateness. Includes review and confirmation of replicate orders.

Ensures positive client recognition, minimum 2 required patient identifiers, prior to performing patient draw. No misidentifications are allowed.

Effectively identifies blood specimens drawn with Initials (PT1 identifier), date, and time of collection on each specimen tube.

Finishes blood attracts a prompt manner, routine – within 6 minutes, challenging cases – within 15 minutes, regular capillary punctures – within 10 minutes.

Processes specimens immediately upon arrival in the lab and disperses to the departments.

Recognizes issues with specimens, attempts to fix problem and alerts appropriate personnel and supervisor. Files procedure.

Reviews tracking display regularly and fixes pending draws

Finishes any draws created 15- minutes prior to move change.

Welcomes outpatients and processes them immediately (within 10 minutes of client’s arrival).

Properly enters specimen info into computer. Medical record number, name, date and time must be confirmed with appropriation with less than 2 date errors per year. No medical record number or name errors.

Shows the appropriate use of phlebotomy equipment and safety devices

Keeps the phlebotomy space and office location well arranged and neat at all times. Keeps paperwork and reports out of access to visitors and clients. Follows HIPAA guidelines.

Keeps inventory of all trays and outpatient phlebotomy location. Each ought to be fully equipped prior to next shift. Keep all trays and draw location clean after usage.

Procedures send-outs prompt and properly based upon specimen and referral lab requirements. All send-out specimens collected approximately 30 minutes prior to end of shift must be processed.

Reviews pending recommendation lab reports for prompt reporting.

Carries out microbiology culture set-up and processes specimens for recommendation to referral lab.

Actively takes part in the training and orientation of new workers and other employees learning brand-new tasks.

Carries out other duties as assigned, by the Lead PT-1, CLS, Laboratory Supervisor, Laboratory Director.

Credentials

1. High School Diploma, or equivalent, needed

2. Present BCLS (AHA) certificate upon hire and keep existing.

3. Minimum 1 year scientific lab experience preferred
