Job Summary:

  • The Licensed Phlebotomy Specialist (CPT) collects, gets, processes and distributes laboratory specimens.
  • The CPT performs patient phlebotomy at different locations.
  • The CPT communicates tests results inter- and intra department as needed.
  • The CPT keeps equipment and supply stock.
  • The CPT keeps a working knowledge of department standard procedure.
  • This knowledge includes the use of customized devices, client recognition and specimen labeling requirements, laboratory security and computer functions connected to order and receipt of specimens.
  • The CPT jobs a picture of professionalism in interaction, look and conduct.
  • The CPT supports the Laboratory objective.
  • The CPT participates in the continuous quality enhancement process.
  • The CPT maintains a working understanding of departmental standard procedure.
  • This knowledge may include using specialized instrumentation, Quality Control requirements, and preventive upkeep.

Job Particular Necessary Funcation:

Technical Tasks:

  • Shows extensive understanding of different phlebotomy strategies.
  • Preserves aseptic strategies when gathering specimens.
  • Uses proper method when drawing blood.
  • Labels specimen immediately after completion of the procedure.
  • Disposes utilized needles and materials in suitable containers.
  • Performs quick registration in Health center Details System.
  • Shows an understanding of laboratory tests, instruments and materials. Transports labels, records, disperses, maintains, shops or disposes specimens properly.
  • Prepares solutions/reagents as needed.
  • Assists in the preparation of specimens for testing and/or shipping.
  • Runs picked laboratory devices under supervision.
  • Cleans and/ or decontaminates instrument, working areas, supplies according to hospital policies.
  • Maintains and orders supplies to keep materials on hand at all times.
  • Checks plan integrity and expiration dates for sterile materials;-LRB-
  • Gets rid of contaminated material in accordance with medical facility policy.
  • Assists with care and maintenance of department equipment.
  • Helps in maintaining laboratory records, including however not limited to the paperwork of purchasing, performing and reporting of laboratory tests.
  • Might help in the training of less experienced phlebotomists as appointed.
  • Gets training in more complicated blood illustration methods as assigned.

Quality Assurance:

  • Actively participates in all department quality control measures.
  • Takes appropriate action when corrections are suggested.
  • Identifies patient samples by stringent adherence to developed procedures; labels samples accurately and totally.

Cooperation:

  • Develops and maintains an expert working relationship with the whole care group along with patients and their families.
  • Communicates with courtesy, accuracy, and reverence for privacy.

Education and Training:

  • Keeps proficiency and actively participates in continuing education programs.
  • Performs other responsibilities as assigned.

Education, Training and Experience Required:

Required:

  • High school graduate or equivalence.
  • Needs to fulfill and preserve present State of California Qualified Phlebotomy Specialist I (CPTI) certification.
  • 1 year of medical healthcare experience or current training through an authorized CPT program

Preferred: Previous experience with billing and registration favored Customer/Client Service experience

  • Knowledge and skills needed to supply age specific care.

License and Accreditations:

Required:

  • A legitimate existing Qualified Phlebotomy Professional I or II by the State of California
  • Proper customer care and interpersonal abilities.
