Lab Assistant - Phlebotomy


Summary

The Laboratory Assistant performs pre-analytical processes associated with registration, processing and collection of laboratory specimens. Uses knowledge of lab operations to help patients in making use of lab services. Complies with all laboratory and security policies. Uses individual protective devices (PPE) as required by laboratory policy and controling agencies. Legacy Lab Services is an integrated laboratory service. Personnel might be appointed to lab facilities at different sites in the system.

Duties

Report circulation and evaluation

Accurate circulation of reports according to treatments at each website.

Evaluation and/or reconciliation of reports as directed by website supervisor.

Client Service

Composed and verbal interaction utilizing but not restricted to Fax, telephone and the Laboratory Info System (LIS).

Interaction complying with laboratory policies and procedures.

Troubleshooting standard client service problems or referring appropriately.

Computer Abilities

Use of the Laboratory Information system and other systems related to the management of patient orders and payment reconciliation. Includes client registration, payment processing, lab order retrieval, and test purchasing.

Phlebotomy

Carries out venipuncture and capillary collections suitable for the age of the client, professionally and with very little discomfort in accordance with laboratory policy.

Specimen recognition

Follows all lab treatments for proper client recognition and specimen labeling.

Drug Screen Collection

Carries out drug screen (may consist of BAT testing) accurately, following guidelines and chain of custody precisely as prescribed.

Specimen Receiving/ Processing

Follows all treatments relating to specimen processing.

Interacts proper information to healthcare service providers relating to specimen collection.

Flags specimens for rejection.

Dispatches specimens to appropriate testing locations.

Aliquots, labels, and processes specimens using suitable equipment and gadgets, i.e., centrifuges and pipettes.

Stores specimens under suitable environmental conditions utilizing authorized retrieval systems.

Maintains lab equipment and the general look of the department.

Computer System Downtime

Demonstrates knowledge of Computer Downtime Treatments.

Understands, for provided job project, how to manage patient/specimen data when either the Order Interaction or Laboratory Information systems are unavailable for usage.

Regulatory Compliance

Follow CAP, CLIA and other accreditation and security standards as explained in their respective guidelines.

Identify and communicate problems that may negatively impact client safety to the supervisor or manager. Participate in government or regulatory agency inspections, if needed.

Training, Education and Security

Participate in department conferences and complete training and education activities as designated by the lab supervisor.

Take part in all relevant safety training sessions. Know the area and contents of the safety manual. Know the location/use of all applicable security devices. Follow basic preventative measures for utilizing individual protective devices as required.

Participate in training/education activities for brand-new workers and trainees as directed by the lab manager/supervisor.

Qualifications

Education:

To fulfill the requirements of lab regulations High school diploma or GED will be verified for any workers hired on or after May 22,2012 For staff members performing waived testing, a copy of the High School diploma or GED should be provided for the department file.

Experience:

Phlebotomy skills are required for lab assistants working in locations that perform specimen collection; previous work experience with phlebotomy or the effective completion of a phlebotomy training course that consisted of an externship is needed.

Understanding and Abilities:

Standard reading and writing skills.

Keyboard skills and capability to browse electronic systems relevant to job functions needed.

Interpersonal and communication abilities required.Ability to operate basic office devices (i.e., telephone, facsimile, copy machine, computer and printer).

Basic Medical terminology chosen.

Experience with drug screen specimen collection and basic specimen selection, handling, and storage activities, chosen.

Client service experience chosen.

Licensure/Certification:

Medical Assistant-Phlebotomist needed for all workers who perform phlebotomy in the State of Washington (including those who float into the function).
