Phlebotomy (from the Greek words phlebo-, indicating “referring to a blood vessel”, and -tomy, indicating “to make an incision”) is the process of making an incision in a vein with a needle. The treatment itself is referred to as a venipuncture. An individual who performs phlebotomy is called a “phlebotomist”, although doctors, nurses, medical laboratory scientists and others do parts of phlebotomy treatments in numerous countries.
Phlebotomists gather blood mostly by carrying out venipunctures, (or, for collection of minute quantities of blood, fingersticks). The responsibilities of a phlebotomist might consist of correctly recognizing the client, interpreting the tests requested on the appropriation, drawing blood into the proper tubes with the appropriate ingredients, accurately discussing the procedure to the patients, preparing clients appropriately, practicing the necessary kinds of asepsis, practicing standard and universal precautions, performing the skin/vein leak, withdrawing blood into containers or tubes, bring back hemostasis of the puncture site, instructing patients on post-puncture care, ordering tests per the physician’s requisition, attaching tubes with digitally printed labels, and delivering specimens to a laboratory.
