My Life With Hemochromatosis
Today, I take you with me on a trip to get my phlebotomy!
According to the Mayo Clinic:
Hereditary hemochromatosis (he-moe-kroe-muh-TOE-sis) causes your body to absorb excessive iron from the food you eat. Excess iron is kept in your organs, particularly your liver, heart and pancreas. Excessive iron can lead to dangerous conditions, such as liver disease, heart issues and diabetes.
The genes that trigger hemochromatosis are inherited, however only a minority of people who have the genes ever establish severe problems. Symptoms and signs of hereditary hemochromatosis generally appear in midlife.
Treatment consists of routinely getting rid of blood from your body. Because much of the body’s iron is consisted of in red blood cells, this treatment decreases iron levels.
