BERLIN (AP) – Germany struck another grim milestone in the coronavirus pandemic on Friday, ticking above 1 million verified cases of COVID-19

The Robert Koch Institute, the nation’s illness control center, said that Germany’s 16 states reported 22,806 cases over night for a total given that the start of the break out of 1,006,394

Despite the high number of infections, Germany has seen less deaths than lots of other European countries, with 15,586 – compared with more than 50,000 in Britain, Italy and France.

A rapid response to the initial outbreak, enormous testing and a robust hospital system have been credited with helping keep the fatalities down. A total of 696,100 individuals have recovered from the infection, according to the Robert Koch Institute’s figures.

The nation is nearly a month in to a so-called “wave-breaker” shutdown instituted Nov. 2 after a worrying increase in day-to-day figures to brand-new record highs. Friday’s overall was slightly less than that reported a week earlier and officials state the new measures have succeeded in halting the rise.

But Chancellor Angela Merkel and state governors chose earlier this week to extend the shutdown well into December and include more limitations to attempt to now bring the numbers down to listed below 50 per 100,000 residents every week. It’s just at that level or below that authorities say they can efficiently trace outbreaks to implement quarantines when needed.

Currently the nation is seeing about 138 cases per 100,000 according to the Robert Koch Institute.
