Phlebotomy (from the Greek words phlebo-, implying “pertaining to a blood vessel”, and -tomy, suggesting “to make an incision”) is the process of making an incision in a vein with a needle. The procedure itself is referred to as a venipuncture. An individual who carries out phlebotomy is called a “phlebotomist”, although physicians, nurses, medical lab scientists and others do parts of phlebotomy procedures in numerous countries.
Phlebotomists gather blood mostly by carrying out venipunctures, (or, for collection of minute quantities of blood, fingersticks). The tasks of a phlebotomist may include appropriately identifying the client, translating the tests requested on the requisition, drawing blood into the appropriate tubes with the correct ingredients, accurately discussing the procedure to the clients, preparing clients accordingly, practicing the required types of asepsis, practicing basic and universal precautions, carrying out the skin/vein puncture, withdrawing blood into containers or tubes, restoring hemostasis of the puncture site, instructing patients on post-puncture care, purchasing tests per the medical professional’s requisition, attaching tubes with digitally printed labels, and delivering specimens to a laboratory.
