Overview

The Laboratory Phlebotomy Manager will provide the technical and personnel management for the Phlebotomy and Central Processing Departments. The position will be accountable for, however not limited to: Assistance and Oversight of Process Enhancement Initiatives, Development of Standards of Work, Quality Assurance, Workflow Coordination, Department Training and Orientation, Timekeeping Recording, and Interaction with Vendors. This position will supply input to the Laboratory Supervisor for personnel assessments, capital and running budgets.

Obligations

1. Carries out direct observation and ensures proficiency for all department personnel.

2. Displays, trends, and reports all Quality Enhancement signs and Focus Research studies. Recommends and carries out enhancements needed to accomplish functional goals and to enhance client outcomes.

3. Makes sure that accreditation standards are satisfied for the department in accordance with CAP, JCAHO, CLIA, OSHA, and so on

4. Follows up on all patient safety associated grievances for department.

5. Documents participation and tardy activity for department personnel.

6. Communicates to staff consistently. Carries out security gathers a minimum of 3 times per week.

7. Demonstrates comprehension of all treatments within the department as specified in the Procedure Manuals. Reviews Manuals biannually, revises procedures as necessary.

8. Reviews productivity information, evaluates and deals with disparities. Investigates doctor problems.

9. Approximate work time is 80% in supervisory role and 20% in staffing (as needed).

10. Goes to required department or hospital meetings.

11. Distributes work to area personnel taking into consideration concern of work and ability of the employee.

12. Prepares regular monthly schedule.

13. Maintains staffing for call-ins or other uncommon circumstances.

14. Maintains an appropriate reagent and supply stock in the department.

15. Assesses new technologies for the area in conjunction with the Manager and Director of the department.

16. Serves in a problem-solving function for the department.

17. Assists in the orientation of new department employees as shown by the completed orientation list in the worker’s personnel file.

18. Collaborates with Supervisor and others to fulfill the educational needs of the staff through presentations, instructional products, online knowing, offsite meetings, etc.

19. Makes recommendation to the Supervisor for hires, promotions, disciplinary actions and terminations.

20. Satisfies frequently with area Manager or Director and seeks participation relating to capital purchases, functional, and technical concerns.

21. Other duties as appointed.

Credentials

Education/ Accreditation/ Licensure (needed & chosen):

  • High school graduate or equivalent is needed; BS or BA in Biological Sciences, Chemistry or Medical Technology chosen.

Experience (required and chosen):

  • 3 years of supervisory or group lead experience needed
  • 5 years of phlebotomy experience is needed
  • 1 year of specimen processing experience required
  • Phlebotomy certification required
  • Accreditation to train CPR is preferred
