Phlebotomy, or drawing blood, is frequently used by men on testosterone and steroids who have a high red blood cell count. However, excessive phlebotomy comes with its own risks. In this video I discuss those risks in the context of a case study, as well as explain why the red blood cells are elevated in the first place: androgen induced erythrocytosis leading to polycythemia. Not all men on androgens experience this, but there are several risk factors to watch out for and steps you can take to monitor yourself and manage the condition if it does occur. If you’re on androgens or are a healthcare provider treating men who may be on androgens, please watch this video!

- May need to represent extended periods of time throughout the day. May require to kneel beside or bend over supine patient to facilitate sample collection.
- Activities are managed by defined procedures and predetermined schedules. Nevertheless, the priority or work need to be figured out by the individual on a continual basis. The performance of work is subject to continuous disruption and re-prioritization due to various emergent scenarios that frequently occur during the day.
- Gathers blood from inpatients, outpatients, and assisted living home according to recognized treatments and policies. Consists of capillary leaks and venipuncture on babies and adults.
- Collects throat swabs for microbiological screening.
- Journeys to other organizations (e.g. assisted living home, off-site clinics) to collect blood/pick-up specimens and/or provide laboratory reports.
- Keeps cool and keeps the specimen receiving locations, phlebotomy work-stations, outpatient drawing labs, ensures all supplies being used are not ended by regularly examining expiration dates and consistently inspecting all locations for expired products. Orders storage room items, anticipates other supply requirements. Informs laboratory inventory person of any supply requires.
- Performs and tapes routine upkeep of point-of-care gadgets and temperatures of offsite lab environment.
- Remains existing with all job-related interactions and subsequent assignments (e-mail, needed actions, etc.)
- Helps in training of new laboratory staff members. Teaches venipuncture, capillary punctures, and arterial punctures, and other work processes to recently employed lab assistants, medical technologists, med tech trainees, nursing students, and lifesaver.
- Carries out other responsibilities and obligations as appointed.

What You’ll Do
Summary:
Functions under the basic supervision of the Lead Phlebotomist, Phlebotomy Coordinator or Lab Manager this employee draws blood from patients in the doctor’s workplace or similar facility for analysis or other medical purposes.
Duties:
1. Greet client
2. Put together equipment such as tourniquet, needles, disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray according to requirements for defined test or procedures
3. Validate or tape-record recognize of patient or donor and reverse with client to allay fear of procedure
4. Apply tourniquet to arm, find available vein, swab puncture area with antibacterial and insert needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube
5. Withdraw needle, apply treatment to puncture site and label and shop blood container for subsequent processing
6. Puncture finger to draw blood

This position is located at Norlanco Lab. Full-time, 40 hours per week. Operational hours are Mon-Thu 630a-7p, Fri 630a-6p. Every other Sat 7a-12p

SUMMARY: Lancaster General Health/Penn Medicine is currently seeking full-time Phlebotomy & Customer Service Specialist at our Norlanco Outpatient Center . Provides complete and accurate patient scheduling, registration, insurance verification, ordering of tests and coordination of applicable screening, diagnostic, physician office and outpatient hospital services. Capable of coordinating and communicating effectively during increased volumes or with complex patients. This position requires clinical skills in the following functional areas: phlebotomy, EKG, holter monitors, point-of-care testing and specimen collection. Maintains required competency skills.
PRIMARY FUNCTIONS:
- Performs venipuncture and capillary specimen collection in an ambulatory setting.
- Validates patient identity, specimen integrity and maintains working knowledge of specimen requirements and all clinical protocols.
- Documents all stages of specimen collection in required computer systems including investigating and processing orders, “receiving” specimens, canceling tests, running collection lists and producing and using reconciliation reports.
- Performs complete and accurate patient registration including but not limited to walk in, check-in, and/or scheduled appointments.
- Demonstrates ability to successfully adapt and perform during times of high volumes and/or high patient acuity. Demonstrates skill to service both inpatient and outpatient, if necessary.
REQUIREMENTS:
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED).
- Completion of educational requirements (additional formal education/training; maximum supervision for initial competency; yearly competency evaluation and training).
- CPR certification within 6 months of hire. (Current employees have until 6/1/2016 to obtain CPR certification).
- One (1) year of clerical, customer service, or administrative support experience in a highly customer-oriented organization.
- One (1) year experience with basic keyboarding, personal computer use, and other office setting equipment.
- Previous phlebotomy or registration experience preferred.
- One (1) year of Epic (or equivalent Electronic Medical Record) experience preferred.
This position requires PA Child Abuse and FBI Fingerprinting Clearances.

- In addition to duties as a CPT 1, employee will:
- Will monitor staff and performance at Patient Service Centers (PSC). Perform staff development for employees assigned to PSCs in their area.
- Will manage Phlebotomy operating policies and procedures for best practices and companywide consistency.
- Will be responsible for all scheduling and payroll for Phlebotomy department
- Will perform quality assurance in each PSC by visiting each site on a regular basis.
- Responsible for ensuring safety, HIPAA, and applicable regulations are being followed in PSC locations. Will be responsible for holding leads accountable to their own job description.
- Responsible for training and development of all lead phlebotomist.

- Will work with internal departments to resolve operational and service issues.
- Must communicate and help train all staff on all processing and specimen requirements
- Report any on the job injuries to management immediately.
